Two million mothers are carrying their children's pain alone. HearHer is finally listening.
Over two million mothers in the UK are raising children with mental health difficulties or neurodevelopmental conditions, navigating daily distress with almost no support designed specifically for them. Dr Faith Martin's NIHR-funded research shows that existing interventions for families in this situation rarely target maternal wellbeing, despite mothers consistently reporting high levels of anxiety, chronic stress, and emotional exhaustion. Generic wellbeing apps overlook the specific reality of parenting a distressed child. Parenting programmes are often inaccessible and standardised. The result is mothers who feel blamed, invisible, and without structured support at the point they need it most.
HearHer is a digital health app providing highly personalised, immediately accessible psychological support for mothers of children with mental health difficulties and neuro-developmental conditions. Available on any smartphone, it can be used while waiting for a CAMHS appointment, between sessions, or on the days when everything feels too heavy.
“My hope is that HearHer helps make personalised psychological support accessible to mothers of children with mental health or developmental challenges, so they feel supported, understood and less alone.”
HearHer runs on two personalisation engines. HerMind uses brief validated assessments to identify the specific psychological mechanisms driving each mother's distress, whether rumination, self-criticism, hypervigilance, or emotional dysregulation, and selects targeted micro-interventions drawn from CBT, ACT, and DBT. HerVoice adapts how that support is delivered, adjusting tone and framing across five communication style profiles. Progress tracking, red-flag safety prompts, and push notifications complete the experience.
HearHer is designed to reach mothers at any point in their child's care journey, including during the long waits that have become a defining feature of the system. Dr Martin is building the support structure that a CAMHS referral currently doesn't come with.
