For many cancer survivors, a very difficult chapter starts after treatment ends. Beyond the Bell is built for that.
Women treated for cancer face a second reckoning once treatment ends. Late effects including menopausal symptoms, sexual dysfunction, fatigue, and financial disruption persist for years after diagnosis and are rarely addressed in follow-up care. The gap falls hardest on ethnic minority, LGBTQ+, rural, and lower-income survivors, who face greater barriers to specialist support and are more likely to experience workplace discrimination and fragmented care. NHS, Macmillan, and patient surveys consistently report that survivorship care falls short, particularly for those already underserved by traditional healthcare pathways.
Developed by Leslye Kemp, a DNP and MPH from Johns Hopkins University, Beyond the Bell is a survivor-centred digital health app for women, trans men, and non-binary individuals navigating life after cancer. Secure symptom tracking, evidence-based self-management resources, automated clinical note generation, and a workplace advocacy toolkit are built into one accessible platform designed to close the equity gaps that currently determine who receives support after treatment.
“My hope is that survivorship care becomes recognised as an essential part of the cancer journey, not something people are expected to figure out for themselves.”
The pilot app includes validated symptom tracking with automated clinical note generation, self-management resources covering menopause, sexual health, cognition, and fatigue, a workplace advocacy toolkit with accommodation templates and rights information, structured educational modules, a peer support forum, and secure messaging with PDF export for sharing with providers or employers.
Beyond the Bell applies clinical, policy, and equity expertise to a problem that affects hundreds of thousands of survivors. The tagline captures the mission precisely: every cancer journey is different, and the app supports them all.
